Speaking From Experience// Secondary Researh

Martin Lewis from Moneysavingexpert.com
This is an online form which helps the user manage their expenditure. You enter your income and then your expenditure information ranging from bills to smoking allowance into the online form and it will calculate how much money you have each month. Its a pretty detailed useful resource... If you can be bothered to do it and check it. Its basically a spreadsheet which has been programmed ready for the user to work.

This money management tool is useful because you can save your expenditure and return back to it tweaking it when your circumstances change.

Speaking from Experience - Message

3 Messages you want to deliver:
I want to tell the audience that they should feel comfortable within the studio environment.

5 Reasons why this message needs delivering:
I want to make the audience feel more comfortable within the studio environment and feel less lost and new.

I think it would make peoples work more creative and confident.

I remember feeling quite, almost scared for the first couple of weeks? This was exciting but also worrying at some points. Maybe remove the anxiety and just be excited. That would be fun.

A happy worker is a productive worker. The key word here being productive.

The studio should be a place people want to be in, rather then being forced. This is the step up to higher education.

Messages you want to deliver:
I want to highlight the fact that everyone is in the same boat in the first year and also that everyone generally feels the same (being new, nervous, excited, scared)

Reasons why this message needs delivering:
I remember thinking my work might be total shit compared to the others within the group. This was wrong.

I think its encouraging to know that everyone is generally nervous in the first week and no one knows what to expect. I think it is reassuring to have a shared feeling of being new to the course.

I think when people know everyone feels the same they quickly interact with one another and talk, making friends and getting to know one another.

I think moving away from home is a big step for some people and again this message would almost be a reassurance.

I think by feeling more relaxed people get more involved and make the experience of first year enjoyable and rewarding.

Messages you want to deliver:
I want explain the journey of the first year while trying to not sound patronising.

Reasons why this message needs delivering:
I think the new first year might be slightly interested.

I think its important they hear someone who has done the first year (pretty much) explanation of the first year.

When people know what to expect I think they feel safer. The unknown is scary.

People might be excited to hear what they are going to do.

Giving them a visual example of what they will do will also show them what we are doing which they might want to see.

3 Problems you think could be addressed by this brief:
Dealing with the unknown. Giving people an understanding of what is expected.

5 Reasons why this needs addressing:
I think people want to know what the bench mark is and how the studio works.

Again making people feel comfortable within the studio.

Studio etiquette is important; we all want to get on, 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Giving people an insight into what projects they can expect.

Knowledge is power.

Problems you think could be addressed by this brief:
Giving the new first years a visual map and guide around the college.

Reasons why this needs addressing:
Everyone hates being lost.

Visual map will give an example of our work.

Making it easy for people to find what they need specific to graphic design students.

They will learn the quickest routes and places to go which should improve their design faster?

Opportunity's for them to find new resources like the laser cutting machine for example.

Problems you think could be addressed by this brief:
Getting people to interact with one another faster.

Reasons why this needs addressing:
Making friends is obviously good for your social life which is important.

Can ask each other questions without feeling awkward, address problems between themselves.

Can share graphic design techniques and tips.

Can speak confidently in front of each other.

Networking is important for graphic designers.

5 Ways to be delivered:
A scroll rolled map, screen printed? informal tone.

A bound book, kind of like the Paul Arden self help book:

A poster showing a day in the life of a first year, a week?

A graphic manifesto for a first year.

A comparison between other students and a graphic design student.

Speaking from Experience - Idea Genoration

The 5 things was a task set by Fred to get us thinking about the first year and significant events that were important to us meaning they might be important to the new first years. I find this a good way to get some ideas. From this task I managed I started generating ideas:
